OTT CBS

The OTT CBS uses the drift-free measuring principle and covers a measurement range of up to 30 m.

An integrated compact piston pump produces the necessary bubbling pressure for the indirect measuring principle. Through a connected measuring tube the compressed air will be blown out in the water via a bubble pot. After the process of blowing the pressure between the measuring tube and the water pressure at the bubble pot is equalised. A pressure measuring cell in OTT CBS measures the air pressure and the prevailing measuring tube pressure successively. By taking the difference between both signals the exact water level will be calculated compensated by drift. The measurement and pumping procedures is carried out at adjustable measuring intervals. After a measurement the OTT CBS is being switched off automatically until the next measurement cycle (standby mode).

The physical measurement principle of the bubble method in determining level in flowing waterways is known as a robust and reliable measurement principle. Its advantages, such as the minimum amount of work needed for installation, its suitability for use in very contaminated waters and its resistance to freezing, have led to the bubble method being selected as the measurement principle for more and more measurement stations.

Design and Functionality of the CBS
The OTT CBS essentially consists of 3 assemblies integrated into a single housing:
• Motor-gear-pump unit
• Pressure measurement unit
• Evaluation electronics with electronic interfaces

Measurement Unit
A durable and fail-safe motor-gear-pump unit produces the pressure necessary for bubbling. This pressure is measured via the pressure measurement unit. The measured values are processed in the evaluation electronics and made available to a data logger via the 4 … 20 mA or the SDI-12 interface.

Users’ Benefits:
• Accurate—Meets and exceeds USGS guidelines for water level accuracy, and will not drift over time
• Complete Solution—Combining the CBS with an EPS-50 bubble chamber reduces the influence of wave action and prevents unnecessary noise in your data
• Low Maintenance—No desiccant required; 5 year life expected based on 1 minute intervals—no pump maintenance or lubrication required
• Easy-to-Start/Easy-to-Install—All programming can be completed using DIP switches; connect into existing platforms using 3/8″ O.D. or 4mm O.D. measuring tube (no adapters required)
• Compact Size—Optimization of air volume required for measurement allows utilization of a small, but powerful spur gear
• motor that fits into a compact package—no compressed gas tank is required
• Low Power—Intelligent pumping strategy compares the previous measurement to the actual pressure at the current measurement, and optimizes the pumping time depending on the difference (i.e., small
changes in level are measured with very short pump cycles)

Advantages of the Bubble Method
In addition to the advantages of the measurement method just described, there are other strong arguments in favor of using an OTT CBS in hydrology, in particular in comparison to pressure probes:
• Maximum protection against lightning strikes
• No contamination of the measurement cell membrane
• Very precise long-term measurement
• Low installation and maintenance requirements
