SonTek-IQ Pipe: Accurate Flow in Totally or Partially Full Pipes

The SonTek-IQ Pipe is intended as either a bottom or top mounted flow meter that can be used in most industrial or agricultural applications. Unlike many other flow meters available today, the SonTek-IQ Pipe automatically determines if the pipe is full or partially full, and identifies the best technique to use to measure the velocity of the water using SmartPulseHD. This information is then used to compute flow, along with accurate water level data provided by the vertical beam and/or pressure sensor. With a special form factor, the SonTek-IQ Pipe can provide accurate flow values in pipes from 0.5 m all the way to 5.0 m in diameter, independent of whether these pipes are full or have only a few inches of water in them.

For pipe or closed conduit applications, the SonTek-IQ Pipe is longer and narrower than the Plus and Standard version, but it also has four velocity profiling beams, though at different angles: 2 along axis beams that are 25° off the vertical and 2 skew beams that are 37° off the vertical and 45° off the horizontal axis. These beam angles were customised for applications in closed conduits. The combination of the beams allows SonTek-IQ products to measure the distribution of velocities horizontally and vertically, thus providing a more accurate flow measurement. Water level and velocity information are then used to compute the flow, mean-velocity and channel area.

SmartPulseHD is an intelligent algorithm that looks at water depth, velocity and turbulence and then adapts the acoustic pulse scheme to those conditions. It uses a variety of cutting edge technology: multi-band acoustics, pulse-coherent, broadband, and incoherent techniques to provide the highest possible resolution with cell sizes down to 2 cm. The end result for end users is highly reliable data with less noise.
