By Danielle DumontHydraulic fracturing has proven to be a useful, albeit controversial process for the extraction of oil and gas from shale rock formations. Prudent to the development and long-term undertaking of a fracking operation is to take the appropriate steps for preliminary assessment as well as ongoing monitoring of the area. And YSI’s environmental monitoring instrumentation solutions can provide spot sample or continuous 24/7 capabilities to deliver critical, real-time data on the conditions at or near hydraulic fracturing sites.The...

At a Korean government research facility, an experiment was designed to see what the environmental impact would be if a large number of animals had to be buried due to a potential foot and mouth epidemic.
For the three year project – which began in February 2012 – five animal graves were specially constructed and filled with different numbers of dead pigs and cattle, and the gases and liquids produced by the decomposing carcasses are being routinely measured.
To monitor the gases, the project requires reliable continuous gas monitoring equipment for unsupervised...

Life-cycle analysis identifies opportunities for emissions reduction
Researchers are attempting to help the U.S. dairy industry decrease its carbon footprint as concentrations of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere reach record levels.
A report by Gregory D. Miller (President), and Ying (Director of Sustainability Research) refers to the work (in the first annual U.S. Dairy Sustainability Commitment Progress Report) as "framing a roadmap of research, tool development, and knowledge sharing.
"Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the leading framework...

The challenge of the green bibbed racers was to kayak, bike and run – with bravery and cunning – to find 28 checkpoints around the harbour and hill perimeter of Nelson within six hours. It was the ENVCO sponsored Lost Ensembles Adventure Racing Team that took up the challenge set down by the Rollo Adventure Race – Urban Nelson. This is their story.Caption: ENVCO Ensembles Adventure Racing Team members Kieran Scott, Andy Weaver, Chris Strang and Martin Doyle.By Martin DoyleLast year the team had a narrow victory over the teenage daughter and her team and, with the fitness and...
One of four D-Opto loggers lost two years ago in Finland has turned up hale and hearty despite the extreme winter conditions it endured.
Professor Lauri Arvola, of the University of Helsinki's Lammi Biological Station in Finland, recently contacted D-Opto to tell us how the instruments – which measure temperature, dissolved oxygen saturation and content – are tough enough to operate and survive even harsh winter conditions.
"We lost, in September 2011, four D-Optologgers during a heavy storm and I already believed we lost them finally," he said.
However, he...

Accurate dissolved oxygen and nitrification measurement
At a time when municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants are looking for energy savings – particularly in the light of global warming and extra demand on New Zealand's power resources during winter – a good strategy is to target savings around the aerator operation.
The efficiencies and energy demands of the nitrification and denitrification phase during the purification process will depend on how well the aeration control system is performing – the aerator equipment is the biggest...
