This battery-powered sensor was developed using frequency domain reflectometry technology (FDR). The meter uses measurement methods which are sensitive to the dielectric properties of the material being measured.
To take a measurement, place the duff sample in the meter's sample chamber and attach the lid. Turn the compression knob until an audible indicator alerts you that the sample has been compressed and measurement is complete. Total measurement time is approximately 30 seconds, and readings are displayed in real-time on the LCD readout. A sieve (included) helps to break up large fragments during sampling and improves measurement accuracy.
The meter's standard calibration converts the output of the measurement circuit to volumetric water content. This factory-supplied calibration is derived from laboratory measurements of duff moisture content from eight different forested sites which include species such as lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, spruce, alpine fir, Douglas fir, and larch. User-derived calibrations can also be used by downloading them with PCDMM software (included). This feature is ideal when testing atypical materials, as well as with known duff bulk density to convert the result to gravimetric water content.
The meter comes complete with a carrying case, software, a 3" diameter #4 mesh brass sieve, 6' serial communications cable, screwdriver, and spare battery.
